We built the top 5 Hobbit commanders on release day

The Hobbit released today. The legends went Commander-legal at prerelease a week ago, and EDHREC is already tracking thousands of decks for them. Brew week does not wait for street dates.

So here is a release-day experiment. I took the five most-built new commanders from the set, ran each one through our deck builder at default settings, and let the bracket engine rate its own output. No hand-tuning, no cherry-picking, no budget cap. Deck counts are EDHREC's, pulled the morning of August 14. Every finished deck is shared in the app, linked at the end of its section.

One thing jumps out before the list even starts. Three of the five decks build around Treasure tokens. This set wants you buried in dragon gold.

1. Thranduil, the Elvenking - 3,600 decks

Sultai Elves, and the most popular new commander by a wide margin. Thranduil has all activated abilities of all Elf cards in your graveyard, and every other legendary Elf you play draws two cards.

The builder went all-in on the tribe. 100% Elf density among creatures, Marwyn and Elvish Archdruid making absurd mana, Lathril and Jarad draining the table to close. It also found six combo lines, including one that only exists as of this set. Woodland Weavemaster taps for mana equal to its power, and Umbral Mantle untaps it for three. Once the power passes the untap cost, that loop never stops. Thranduil runs it himself too, borrowing the Weavemaster's ability straight out of the graveyard. He's a 5/6, so he's already past the untap cost and nets mana on the very first activation.

Rated bracket 3 with an estimated win around turn 6.7. Deck health 84, the best of the five. About $846 as built. See the full deck.

2. Smaug the Impenetrable - 2,935 decks

A seven-mana Rakdos dragon with flying, indestructible, and haste that turns every point of noncombat damage dealt to it into that many Treasures. Indestructible is doing real work in that sentence.

The builder read this exactly the way brewers on EDHREC did. Pestilence and Pyrohemia ping your own indestructible dragon and pile up gold. Mayhem Devil turns each Treasure you sacrifice into another ping, which mints its replacement, while Reckless Fireweaver and Mirkwood Bats drain the table for every artifact that enters. Ten combo lines total, the most of any deck here, and the deck runs all three new Smaug cards for flavor points.

Fastest of the five at an estimated turn 6.0, bracket 3, with one Game Changer to disclose (Demonic Tutor). The honest part of the report card is deck health at 59. A seven-mana commander in a manabase the health check flags for colorless-heavy lands is a real cost, and the tool says so even about its own deck. About $761 as built. See the full deck.

3. Smaug the Magnificent - 2,392 decks

The mono-red Smaug makes a Treasure every upkeep, and when he attacks he deals damage equal to your Treasure count to any target. Flying, haste, four mana.

The builder assembled a Treasure-combat list. Goldspan Dragon and Xorn double the gold, Dragon's Desire taxes your opponents' mana rocks for a burst of red, and The Reaver Cleaver plus Orcrist convert combat hits back into more Treasures. Win condition is combat damage, which for this card means the damage trigger scales into lethal as the pile grows.

Bracket 3, estimated win turn 6.8, deck health 78. Our At the Table read puts it at Contender, mostly because it takes long turns and points burn at faces. About $582 as built. See the full deck.

4. Thorin, King of Durin's Folk - 2,342 decks

Boros Dwarves. Every Dwarf that enters makes a Treasure, and your Dwarves get +1/+0 for each artifact token you control. The tribe pays for itself and grows off its own savings.

This build is the set flexing. Twenty-one cards in the finished deck are from The Hobbit itself, because the set shipped an entire functional Dwarf tribe in one go. Thorin Oakenshield, Fili and Kili, three different Dains, Balin, Dwalin, Dori, and the classics Magda and Gloin from earlier sets to hold it together. The builder found Cloudstone Curio loops with cheap Dwarves for infinite Treasure triggers.

Bracket 3, estimated win turn 6.7, and the mellowest table presence of any tribal deck here at Chill. Deck health 63, with the report calling out light removal and only one board wipe. About $480 as built. See the full deck.

5. Beorn the Fierce - 2,102 decks

Mono-green Bears. Yes, Bears. Beorn pumps the tribe, converts any creature into a Bear with a trample counter each combat, and draws you two cards when you control three or more.

Somewhere, a Werebear that has waited a quarter of a century for a commander just woke up. The builder pulled Ayula, Goreclaw, Owlbear Cub, and Wilson, Refined Grizzly into the most synergy-dense deck of the five, with 64 of 67 nonland cards synergizing with the commander. No combos, no tricks, just an honest curve of angry wildlife.

Bracket 3, estimated win turn 7.5, deck health 81, and an At the Table score of literally zero. Chill does not get more chill. Also the cheapest build at about $328. See the full deck.

What the set actually wants

Five builds at default settings, five decks that landed on their bracket 3 target, with estimated win turns spread from 6.0 to 7.5. That spread is the interesting part. Same request, same engine, and the commanders themselves pulled the results a full turn and a half apart.

The other takeaway is that The Hobbit is a Treasure set wearing a tribal coat. Both Smaugs and Thorin turn gold into damage or stats, and even the Elf and Bear decks splash the set's artifact toys. If your table is about to see a lot of this set, expect a lot of clinking.

Every number above is dated August 14, 2026, and came from the same engine that rates any deck you paste. If one of these five caught your eye, the builder will hand you the full 100 cards in a second or two.
