Keen Engineering upgrade guide, the Foundations Commander Sai precon

Sai, Master Thopterist

Keen Engineering is the mono-blue deck in the Foundations Commander line. $29.99, out since October 2 beside Reality Fracture. Sai, Master Thopterist leads it. It's one of five mono-color decks built for new players.

We ran the stock list through our bracket analyzer. Bracket 2, estimated win around turn 8.5. Zero Game Changers, zero tutors, one fast mana source (Sol Ring), no combo lines. The analyzer calls the table feel casual. That is about right for a $30 precon.

EDHREC already has 4,005 Sai decks. Every swap below comes from what those decks actually play and what they cut, and every tier was run through the same analyzer.

How the deck works

Cast artifacts. Get flying 1/1s. Make the 1/1s big.

Sai costs three mana and does two things. Every time you cast an artifact spell, you get a 1/1 Thopter token with flying. And for 2 mana you can sacrifice two artifacts to draw a card. Thopters are artifacts, so Sai feeds herself. Cast a Mind Stone, get a Thopter. Late in the game, cash in spare Thopters and old mana rocks for cards.

The rest of the deck lines up behind that. Etherium Sculptor and Foundry Inspector make artifacts cheaper, so you cast more of them per turn. Master of Etherium, Chief of the Foundry and Steel Overseer pump every artifact creature, Thopters included. Thopter Spy Network makes more Thopters and draws when they connect. Graaz turns all of them into 5/3s.

The plan is a wide flying army. Ten 1/1 flyers is not scary. Ten 3/3 flyers ends the game in two swings.

What to cut first

EDHREC shows which stock cards Sai players are already taking out. These are the lowest inclusion rates in the deck.

Card In Sai decks
Fall from Favor 5.1%
Cultivator's Caravan 6.8%
Skysovereign, Consul Flagship 8.1%
Memory Guardian 8.5%
Mind's Eye 8.7%
Pull from Tomorrow 9.6%
Remote Isle 10.2%
Duplicant 10.2%

Two stock cards, Mazemind Tome and Spire Golem, are not in EDHREC's Sai lists at all.

Fall from Favor is an Aura in an artifact deck. It doesn't make a Thopter. Cultivator's Caravan wants crew 3 from a deck full of 1/1s, and its color fixing does nothing in mono-blue. Spire Golem and Memory Guardian are plain flyers. Sai makes flyers for free. Duplicant is the one we keep. It's real removal and the deck has little of it.

Tier 1. About $10, the day-one swaps

Seven swaps for $10.16.

Cut Add Why
Fall from Favor Efficient Construction A second Sai that can't die in combat. In 63.7% of Sai decks.
Cultivator's Caravan Stridehangar Automaton Every artifact token comes with a bonus Thopter, and Thopters get +1/+1. 59.3%.
Memory Guardian Ornithopter Costs zero. Cast it, get a Thopter, and Sai has something to sacrifice.
Mind's Eye Skullclamp Put it on a 1/1 Thopter, it dies, you draw two. The best card draw in the deck for $5.
Pull from Tomorrow Emry, Lurker of the Loch Often costs one mana here. Recasts an artifact from your graveyard every turn, which means another Thopter.
Spire Golem Sharding Sphinx Every artifact creature that hits a player makes another Thopter. 54.1%.
Island Seat of the Synod An Island that counts as an artifact. Cheaper Thoughtcast, bigger Master of Etherium. 62.2%.

The analyzer still says Bracket 2, and the turn estimate moves from 8.5 to 9.0. That's fine. These swaps don't buy a faster kill. They buy a better tuned deck. More Thopters per artifact, more cards per Thopter, fewer dead draws. The stock list wins fast when it draws well. This one does its thing almost every game.

Tier 2. About $23 more, the Sai package

Seven more swaps. These are the artifact-deck staples Sai players lean on.

Cut Add Why
Psychosis Crawler Mystic Forge Cast artifacts off the top of your library. Every one is a Thopter. 51.5%.
Skysovereign, Consul Flagship Idol of Oblivion Draws a card any turn you made a token, which with Sai is most turns. 42.4%.
Nevinyrral's Disk Bident of Thassa Draws a card for every creature that connects. Twenty Thopters, twenty cards. Disk also blows up your own board.
Darksteel Juggernaut Mechanized Production Copies an artifact every upkeep. Eight copies of the same thing wins the game on the spot.
Scrawling Crawler Chief Engineer Your Thopters help pay for your artifacts. Crawler draws your opponents cards too.
Misleading Signpost Jhoira's Familiar A 4-mana flyer that makes every artifact cheaper.
Remote Isle Academy Ruins Puts a dead artifact back on top of your library. Pairs well with Mystic Forge.

Academy Ruins is $9.06 of that $22.77. It is the one to skip if you're counting.

A note on Mechanized Production. It is an alternate win condition, not an infinite combo, and it takes a few upkeeps to get there. Tell the table what it does when it hits the board. Nobody likes losing to a card they didn't read.

Still Bracket 2, still around turn 9.0. The kill turn holds steady while the deck gets more consistent. Mystic Forge, Idol and Bident keep the cards coming, so you stop running out of gas after one board wipe.

Tier 3. About $57 more, the serious-but-casual upgrade

Nine swaps. No Game Changers, no tutors, no combos.

Cut Add Why
Lonely Sandbar Reliquary Tower Skullclamp, Idol and Bident draw a lot. Stop discarding. 45.1%.
Tamiyo's Logbook Unwinding Clock All your artifacts untap on every opponent's turn. Thopters attack and still block. Rocks make mana twice a round.
Propaganda Liberator, Urza's Battlethopter Cast artifacts at instant speed. Make Thopters on other people's turns.
Myr Battlesphere The Reality Chip Attach it to a creature and you play lands and cast spells off the top of your library. 30.5%.
Meteor Golem Pongify One-mana creature removal. Meteor Golem does the same job for seven.
Hedron Archive Thran Dynamo Three colorless mana for four. Better rock for an artifact deck.
Mazemind Tome Cloud Key Name artifact. Everything gets cheaper again. 36.2%.
Broodstar Lightning Greaves Sai dies to everything. Greaves keeps her on the table, and it costs zero to move.
Steel Hellkite Wayfarer's Bauble Cheap ramp that's also an artifact spell, so it's also a Thopter.

Unwinding Clock is $22.83 of the $57.30. It is also the card that changes how the deck plays the most.

Still Bracket 2, still turn 9.0, no combo lines. This is the most tuned version of the deck. It draws more, protects Sai and recovers from a wipe, and it does it without touching the kill turn. That's the list we'd bring to a Bracket 2 table.

Take it to Bracket 3

If your group has outgrown precons, this is the next step. It means Game Changers. The three Sai players run most are Cyclonic Rift (22.3%), Rhystic Study (14.8%) and Fierce Guardianship (12.9%).

Cut Add Why
Launch Mishap Cyclonic Rift Bounce one thing for 2. Late game, bounce everything your opponents own and swing into an empty board.
Thirst for Knowledge Rhystic Study The best card draw in blue.
Negate Fierce Guardianship Free counterspell while Sai is out. Protects your board from a wipe.

That's $172.18 for three cards. Rhystic Study alone is $69.59.

The analyzer says Bracket 3, estimated win around turn 6.7. It flags all three as Game Changers, which means pre-game disclosure at a Bracket 3 table. Three is the Bracket 3 limit. Add a fourth and the deck is Bracket 4 by the rules. Still no combo lines.
