Reign of Dragons upgrade guide, the Foundations Commander Lathliss precon

Lathliss, Dragon Queen
Lathliss, Dragon Queen, art by Alex Konstad

Reign of Dragons is the mono-red deck in the Foundations Commander line. $29.99, out since October 2 beside Reality Fracture. Lathliss, Dragon Queen leads it. It is built for new players, and it plays like it.

We ran the stock list through our bracket analyzer. Bracket 2, estimated win around turn 8.4. Zero Game Changers, zero tutors, one fast mana source (Sol Ring), zero combos. The analyzer reads it as a Dragon tribal flying deck, which is exactly what it is.

Lathliss has been around since 2018, so EDHREC already has 4,891 Lathliss decks. Every swap below comes from what those decks play and what they leave out. Every tier was run through the same analyzer, three times each.

How the deck works

Cast Dragons. Get more Dragons for free. Hit people in the air.

Lathliss costs six and is a 6/6 flier. Whenever another nontoken Dragon enters under your control, you also get a 5/5 flying Dragon token. So every Dragon you cast is really two Dragons. Her other ability is {1}{R} to give all your Dragons +1/+0, which adds up fast when you have five of them.

The rest of the deck does three jobs.

  1. Make Dragons cheaper. Dragonlord's Servant and Nogi each knock a mana off every Dragon, and Dragonspeaker Shaman knocks off two. Herald's Horn and the Orbs of Dragonkind help too.
  2. Punish people when Dragons arrive. Scourge of Valkas and Dragon Tempest deal damage every time a Dragon enters, and Lathliss's tokens count. One Dragon cast with Lathliss out can mean two triggers each.
  3. Make the Dragons huge. Crucible of Fire gives them +3/+3. Utvara Hellkite makes a 6/6 every time one attacks.

The weak spot is the turns before Lathliss. Most of your threats cost five or more. If you don't draw ramp, you spend turns three and four doing very little. The upgrades below mostly fix that, and add removal that doesn't hit your own fliers.

What to cut first

EDHREC shows which stock cards Lathliss players leave out. These are the lowest inclusion rates in the deck.

Card In Lathliss decks
Goddric, Cloaked Reveler 5.7%
Hit the Mother Lode 10.6%
Basilisk Collar 11.7%
The Elder Dragon War 11.8%
Bitter Reunion 14.1%
Count on Luck 15.0%
Chandra's Ignition 16.5%
Anger 16.7%

One caveat. Most of those 4,891 decks were built before this precon existed, so a newer card can look rarer than it deserves. The cuts still hold up on their own. Goddric is only a Dragon on turns you've already played two permanents, so he almost never enters as one and almost never triggers Lathliss. Basilisk Collar wants a pinger, and the deck has none. Anger only gives haste from the graveyard, so it has to die or get discarded first. Chain Reaction (19.9%) is worse than it looks. It kills your own Dragons too.

Tier 1. About $10, the day-one swaps

Seven swaps for $9.61. This is the tier we would do on day one.

Cut Add Why
Goddric, Cloaked Reveler Ganax, Astral Hunter In 68.5% of Lathliss decks, the most-played card the precon skips. A Treasure every time a Dragon enters.
Hit the Mother Lode Dragon's Fire Seven mana for a random card becomes two mana of removal. With a Dragon in hand or on the board, it deals that Dragon's power instead of 3.
Basilisk Collar Desolation of Smaug 3 damage to every non-Dragon creature, then four mana for Dragons. A wipe that ramps you.
Anger Steel Hellkite A Dragon that blows up whatever your opponents have at one mana value after it connects.
Count on Luck Earthquake Hits every creature without flying, and your Dragons all fly. It hits every player too, so watch your own life.
Chain Reaction Thundermaw Hellkite Swap a wipe that kills your board for a hasty 5/5 that taps their fliers.
Bitter Reunion Demanding Dragon Another Dragon to trigger Lathliss. The opponent you pick takes 5 or loses a creature.

The analyzer still says Bracket 2, around turn 8.4. Speed stays put. What changes is that two of your sweepers now leave your fliers alone, and Ganax pays you back for every Dragon you cast. With Lathliss out, that's two Treasures a Dragon.

Tier 2. About $23 more, the Lathliss package

Five more swaps for $22.91. These are the cards Lathliss decks lean on most.

Cut Add Why
The Elder Dragon War Sarkhan, Fireblood In 41% of decks. Two mana for Dragons every turn, or loot. His -7 is four 5/5 Dragons.
Chandra's Ignition Wrathful Red Dragon In 53.1%. When a Dragon takes damage, it deals that much to any non-Dragon target. Blasphemous Act turns into 13 damage per Dragon.
Outpost Siege Hellkite Tyrant In 46.1%. Connects and takes every artifact that player controls. Their mana rocks become yours.
Forgotten Cave Crucible of the Spirit Dragon Land for land. Stores up mana for a big Dragon turn.
Taurean Mauler Ryusei, the Falling Star A six-drop flier. When it dies, it deals 5 to every creature without flying.

Still Bracket 2, now around turn 8.3.

We first had Maelstrom of the Spirit Dragon in that land slot. It's in 29.9% of decks, but it can sacrifice itself to search for a Dragon, and the analyzer counts that as a tutor. Crucible does the mana half of the job without the search.

Tier 3. About $61 more, the damage engine

Three more swaps for $60.92. This tier is where Lathliss starts ending games off a single Dragon.

Cut Add Why
Breath Weapon Terror of the Peaks In 52%. Every creature that enters deals its power to any target. Each Lathliss token is 5 more damage.
Goldlust Triad Twinflame Tyrant In 38.5%. Doubles all the damage you deal to opponents and their stuff. Scourge, Tempest and Terror all double.
Cursed Mirror Stormscale Scion Other Dragons get +1/+1. Cast it after a spell or two and storm makes extra copies.

Still Bracket 2, around turn 8.2. Cast one Dragon with Lathliss, Terror and Scourge of Valkas out, and you're throwing around 20 damage before combat.

Two popular cards are missing on purpose. Goldspan Dragon (56.5%) and Urza's Incubator (38.1%) are both great here. We tested each one on its own on top of tier 2. Each one pushes the estimate to about turn 7.6 or 7.7, under our Bracket 3 line at turn 8. If your table is fine with Bracket 3, add them. If you want this deck to stay a Bracket 2 deck, leave them out.

Take it to Bracket 3

If you've outgrown the precon and play at Bracket 3 tables, that means Game Changers. Three are allowed. These are the three Lathliss players actually run.

Cut Add Why
Unexpected Windfall Jeska's Will In 26.2%. A pile of red mana plus up to three cards off the top. The best ritual in red.
Thrill of Possibility Gamble In 8.3%. Find Terror of the Peaks or Twinflame Tyrant, then discard a random card. A real tutor.
Temple of the False God Ancient Tomb In 9.0%. Land for land, but this one taps for two on turn one.

Bracket 3, estimated win around turn 6.5. The analyzer flags all three as Game Changers. That's the Bracket 3 limit, so add a fourth and the deck is Bracket 4 by the rules. Still no combos.

This tier costs $178.96, and Ancient Tomb is $119.18 of it. If that's too much, skip it. Jeska's Will and Gamble together are under $60.
