Tramplesaurus Rex upgrade guide, the Foundations Commander Ghalta precon

Ghalta, Primal Hunger

Tramplesaurus Rex is the green deck in Foundations Commander. $29.99, out since October 2 beside Reality Fracture. Ghalta, Primal Hunger leads it in mono-green. It is one of five mono-color decks built for new players.

We ran the stock list through our bracket analyzer. Bracket 2, estimated win around turn 8.7. Zero Game Changers, zero tutors, one fast mana source (Sol Ring), no combos. A clean, honest Bracket 2 deck.

Ghalta has been a popular commander for years. EDHREC has 10,039 Ghalta decks. Every swap below comes from what those decks actually play and what they leave out, and every tier was run through the same analyzer.

How the deck works

Play big creatures. Get Ghalta out for almost nothing. Attack.

Ghalta is a 12/12 with trample that costs twelve mana. That sounds unplayable. The catch is that Ghalta costs X less, where X is the total power of the creatures you control. Get a 5/5 and a 7/6 on the table and Ghalta costs two green mana.

So the early turns are about two things. Make mana with elves, Birds of Paradise and Rishkar's Expertise. Then put power on the board. Gigantosaurus, Hulking Raptor, Steel Leaf Champion and Pugnacious Hammerskull all bring a lot of power for their cost. Goreclaw makes every creature with 4 or more power cost two less.

Trample is the other half. Trample means damage your attacker deals past the blocker's toughness goes through to the player. Ghalta has it, and Garruk's Uprising, Rhonas's Monument and Overwhelming Stampede hand it to the rest of your team. Surrak, the Hunt Caller and Swiftfoot Boots give haste, so a freshly cast Ghalta can swing that turn.

Removal is built on the same idea. Ram Through, Bite Down and Monstrous Onslaught use your creatures' power to kill things. Bigger creatures, bigger removal.

The weak spot is card draw and protection. Green runs out of cards, and one removal spell on Ghalta undoes a lot of setup. Most of the upgrades below fix those two things.

What to cut first

EDHREC shows which stock cards Ghalta players are already taking out. These are the lowest inclusion rates in the deck.

Card In Ghalta decks
Arachnogenesis 8.5%
Curious Altisaur 13.4%
Ripjaw Raptor 13.8%
Monstrous Onslaught 14.3%
Scavenger Grounds 14.6%
Carnage Tyrant 15.3%
Thickest in the Thicket 15.6%
Tranquil Thicket 16.1%

Twelve more stock cards don't show up in EDHREC's Ghalta lists at all. Arasta of the Endless Web, Challenger Troll, Clifftop Lookout, Commander's Sphere, Dungrove Elder, Loot, Exuberant Explorer, Paradise Druid, Rishkar, Peema Renegade, Scrapshooter, Terrian, World Tyrant, Whiptongue Hydra and Whisperer of the Wilds. Some are fine cards that just aren't what Ghalta players reach for. Some are real misfits.

Arachnogenesis is a defensive trick in a deck that wants to be the one attacking. Arasta punishes opponents for casting instants, which has nothing to do with Ghalta. Scrapshooter only kills an artifact if you hand an opponent a card first. Whiptongue Hydra wipes fliers, which is a fine card in the wrong deck.

We keep two low-ranked cards. Monstrous Onslaught is real removal that scales with your board. Terrian is a 9-power creature for five mana, which is exactly what Ghalta wants on the table.

Tier 1. About $11, the day-one swaps

Six swaps for $11.00. Every add is in at least a third of Ghalta decks.

Cut Add Why
Arachnogenesis Return of the Wildspeaker In 57.7% of Ghalta decks. Draw cards equal to your biggest creature's power. With Ghalta out, that's twelve.
Arasta of the Endless Web Topiary Stomper 56.4%. A 4/4 for three that ramps a land. It can't attack early, but its power still makes Ghalta cheaper.
Scrapshooter Reclamation Sage Kills an artifact or enchantment without gifting anyone a card.
Whiptongue Hydra Ghalta the Unstoppable 36.0%. A second Ghalta at 45 cents. Costs less for your biggest power and gives your whole team trample.
Curious Altisaur Fanatic of Rhonas 42.9%. Taps for four green with a 4-power creature out. The 1/4 body survives most early attacks.
Ripjaw Raptor Wayward Swordtooth 44.9%. An extra land every turn and 5 power toward Ghalta on turn three.

The analyzer still says Bracket 2, around turn 8.7. Same speed, a lot more gas. Return of the Wildspeaker alone fixes the stock deck's biggest problem, which is running out of cards after one big attack.

Tier 2. About $22 more, the Ghalta package

Eight more swaps for $21.80. This is where the deck starts doing Ghalta things on purpose.

Cut Add Why
Carnage Tyrant Majestic Genesis 43.0%. Reveals cards equal to your commander's mana value. For Ghalta that's twelve, and every permanent among them goes onto the battlefield.
Shamanic Revelation Garruk, Primal Hunter 28.0%. Makes a 3/3 every turn, or draws cards equal to your biggest creature's power.
Verdant Sun's Avatar Greater Good 35.3%. Ghalta about to get exiled? Sacrifice it, draw twelve, discard three.
Challenger Troll Eternal Witness 29.8%. Gets back the removal spell or the creature you lost.
Clifftop Lookout Kogla, the Titan Ape 31.5%. Seven power for six mana, fights on the way in, kills an artifact or enchantment every attack.
Yeva, Nature's Herald Frenzied Baloth 31.4%. Two mana, haste, and your creatures can't be countered.
Whisperer of the Wilds Hunter's Insight 30.8%. Cast it on an attacking Ghalta. Twelve trample damage in, up to twelve cards drawn.
Commander's Sphere Lightning Greaves 34.2%. A second haste equipment, and shroud keeps Ghalta from being targeted. Equips for free.

Whisperer and Commander's Sphere go because tier 1 already added Fanatic of Rhonas, a better Whisperer. Ghalta doesn't need much colorless ramp when power on the board pays most of its cost.

One card we left out on purpose. Selvala, Heart of the Wilds is in 49.2% of Ghalta decks. She taps for mana equal to your biggest creature's power, so she makes twelve mana once Ghalta lands. Our analyzer counts her as fast mana, and with her in this tier the deck read Bracket 3 around turn 7.7. She is the first card to add if your table plays Bracket 3.

The analyzer still says Bracket 2, around turn 8.8. The extra tenth of a turn is noise. What changed is that a removal spell on Ghalta no longer ends your game, and Greater Good, Garruk and Hunter's Insight all turn Ghalta's 12 power into cards.

Open the tier 2 list in the analyzer.

Tier 3. About $59 more, the serious-but-casual upgrade

Six more swaps for $58.51. Better lands, better protection, more ways to cheat on mana.

Cut Add Why
Collective Resistance Heroic Intervention 44.8%. Your whole board gets hexproof and indestructible. Answers a board wipe for two mana.
Thickest in the Thicket The Skullspore Nexus 32.1%. Costs less with power on the board. If Ghalta dies, you get a 12/12 token back. It can also double a creature's power.
Dungrove Elder Traverse the Outlands 31.7%. Fetches basics equal to your biggest creature's power. With Ghalta out, that's most of your Forests.
Loot, Exuberant Explorer Emerald Medallion 40.2%. Every green spell costs one less, and that's nearly every spell in the deck.
Tranquil Thicket Castle Garenbrig 35.7%. A Forest that can make six mana for creatures.
Witch's Clinic Reliquary Tower 40.7%. No maximum hand size. Greater Good and Hunter's Insight can draw you twelve.

Heroic Intervention is $17.47 of the $58.51. If you want to save there, Snakeskin Veil does a smaller version for a quarter. The two land swaps keep the land count at 39.

The analyzer still says Bracket 2, now around turn 8.5. Three tiers and $91 in, the deck is faster, draws far more cards and protects its commander, with zero Game Changers and no combos.

Take it to Bracket 3

Your group has outgrown the precon and plays Bracket 3. That allows up to three Game Changers, the cards Wizards lists as the most powerful in the format. Here are the three Ghalta players run most that won't cost you a paycheck.

Cut Add Why
Rishkar, Peema Renegade Worldly Tutor 13.5%. One mana, put any creature on top of your library. The best way to find Gigantosaurus or Terrian on turn three.
Tamiyo's Safekeeping Natural Order 12.3%. Sacrifice a green creature, put any green creature from your library onto the battlefield. Turn a 1-power dork into Elder Gargaroth.
Harmonize Crop Rotation 6.6%. Sacrifice a land, fetch any land. Grab Castle Garenbrig at instant speed or Mosswort Bridge when it's ready.

Gaea's Cradle is the third most played Game Changer in Ghalta decks at 7.6%. It also costs $1,626, so we skipped it. If you own one, it replaces Crop Rotation. Ancient Tomb is next at 5.1% and $119.

That's $69.78 for the three. The analyzer reads Bracket 3, estimated win around turn 6.5, and confirms all three as Game Changers. That is two full turns faster than stock. Three is the Bracket 3 limit. Add a fourth and the deck is Bracket 4 by the rules. Natural Order and Worldly Tutor are tutors, so tell your table they're in before the game. Still no combos.

Selvala, Heart of the Wilds from tier 2 fits here too. She isn't a Game Changer, so she doesn't count against the three.
